About Reuse Ottawa
Eliminating Single Use Plastic Waste
Circular Innovation Council is a leading national not-for-profit organization dedicated to accelerating Canada’s transition toward a circular economy. We are currently leading several national reuse initiatives to address single use plastic waste.
Reuse Ottawa is set to revolutionize how we think about food packaging in the nation’s capital. Through this exciting pilot program, we’re making it easier than ever for residents and businesses to reduce single-use plastic waste—starting with reusable food containers.
This pilot is a unique collaborative effort between Circular Innovation Council and major Canadian grocery retailers—Metro, Sobeys, Farm Boy, and Walmart —with the support of Environment and Climate Change Canada and the City of Ottawa and other service partners.
How it works
Borrow. Return. Earn.
The design of this pilot program is collaborative at its core, any interested grocer, restaurant, or food service business is encouraged and invited to participate. Participating locations will be provided a suite of reusable containers they can use for various food items. They will have access to promotional material, container tracking, washing, and distribution services provided as part of the pilot.
Consumers can easily track their reusable containers via the Reusables app or receive updates to their phone number, and the containers are free of charge if they are returned within 14 days. Convenient collection bins will be located at participating businesses and other high-traffic areas in the city. Consumers will also be eligible for discounts and incentives when choosing and returning their reusable containers.
We are confident that this program will set a new standard for reusable packaging in the food service industry, furthering Canada’s collective efforts to eliminate single-use plastics.
